On the turf behind Jefferson Township High School is where everyone gathers to support the Falcons. Students and families from all over town come and support our teams.

Summer Sanderson of the Falcons is in her Sophomore year of field hockey. Sanderson plays for the Junior Varsity team with Coach Farris. This season has been extremely difficult so far due to the fact that she is playing her sport during a global pandemic. Sanderson said, “This season is so unlike any other that we have played, but I think the Falcons can overcome the challenges presented to them.”

The Jefferson field hockey team has pushed their season back from August to September. Because of the Coronavirus the school is trying to keep the student athletes, coaches and staff safe at all times. The student athletes are now only playing about half the amount of games they normally would. They are also ensuring that they are following the rules of social distancing and wearing masks or facial coverings at all times.

Sanderson said, “The team is handling these changes very well and we’re all still trying to get used to wearing masks but now it is starting to come naturally.”

While not on school grounds there are no mandatory rules that are needed to be followed, according to Sanderson. They suggest not to go anywhere that can put you at risk for getting the virus, but nothing is mandatory.

Sanderson said, “My main priority is staying safe, keeping my family safe and keeping my team and everyone around them safe.”

The team is adjusting well to all of these new and upcoming changes. At this point it has been about two months and the season will only continue for another month. The team is still able to play games and go to practices on a daily basis which greatly impacts the process.

Sanderson said, “I am so excited for the rest of this season and to see what our team can accomplish.”

Last season the Jefferson Falcons Girls Field hockey team was able to hang a banner for the first time in Falcon history after winning their conference.

This season Sanderson and her team will be playing on the JTHS turf.
