On a whim Freshman year, now Junior Sarah Leppard joined field hockey and has been a contributor to the team since then. The Jefferson Township Field Hockey team has started off this year's season with a 2-0 record. This past week their record has fallen to 3-2 but Leppard is confident the team will finish successfully.
Last season, Leppard was a part of the team that won their conference. They were the first field hockey team in Jefferson to ever take home the title.
“Coming off last season as conference champs has added extra pressure and excitement to this season,” Leppard said when asked how the win has affected this season.
In a regular season, field hockey practices begin in early August. Corona, however, delayed practices to September 14th which has proven challenging with so much practice time lost.
“Corona has affected our season by pushing our season back from August to September 14th...we have to arrive at practice with a health screening completed and when we arrive we need to have our temperatures checked,” Leppard said this regarding the delay but still has a positive outlook.
“The team looks really good, but we obviously still haven't reached our best being so early in the season. Coming off such a great season last year, I’m still really confident we can turn things around.”
Although they now hold a 3-2 record, it is early in the season for Sarah and this talented group of girls. As conference champs it is clear they have the talent and motivation to get back on top despite the circumstances.
