Is the Ski Industry in the MID Atlantic at Risk? By Ryan Clarkson

Is the Ski Industry in the MID Atlantic at Risk?

By Ryan Clarkson

Industries across the world have taken a heavy hit due to the COVID-19 virus, including the ski and snowboard industry. The 2019/2020 season was cut short due to covid, and riders are left wondering what's in store for the winter months. Upcoming snowboarder Colby Clarkson’s progress was put to a halt when resorts shut down in March. Clarkson said, “Toward the end of the season my progress and recognition was really increasing. When covid hit I missed out on important trips as well as valuable training time.” As the season approaches, riders such as Clarkson are left with some unanswered questions.

Although nobody knows exactly what this season holds, there is  a glimpse of covid-related precautions that may be taken. Here in Northern New Jersey, Big Snow American Dream offers the first year round on snow experience in the western hemisphere. After opening in December, the freezer was shut down because of Coronavirus. After being left dormant for several months big snow reopened, yet the reopening carried some restrictions. Capacity limits were put in place, temperature checks were implemented, masks were deemed mandatory at all times and social distancing measures came as well. The question is, will these restrictions be adopted by ski resorts this winter?

Mountain Creek ski resort has yet to release Coronavirus guidelines for the upcoming season, but the bike park is giving some insight. Unless bikers are on trail face masks are required, attendance has been limited, reservations are required, cars must be parked a space apart and there have been some operation changes. Considering downhill mountain biking follows a similar structure to ski and snowboarding, it is very likely we will see these restrictions this winter. Outside of restrictions, Mountain Creek has unfortunately canceled ski races and other events, which puts a damper on the year for many skiers and competition riders in the Mid Atlantic.

Riders ranging across the world are getting ready, or just returning to snow. In Switzerland, Saas-fee ski resort has opened with limited restrictions. After opening and lifting tourism restrictions, Saas-fee is asking customers to take responsibility. The resort is asking for riders to maintain distance, wear masks in indoor spaces, and set hygiene standards high. The resort and town have also taken measures to provide hand sanitizers and make sure people are following guidelines.

In short, we will ride this season, but we will also have to follow some unwanted restrictions. Clarkson stated, “A cure is the only thing that will enhance my progression. Being able to travel and go to the mountain without risk is everything to me.” The bigger picture is finding a cure to COVID-19, so skiing and snowboarding, as well as the world can return to normal

Comments

  1. Mountain Creek seems like it will open since they are still selling passes and talking about them opening. They might do no day passes to limit the riders there.
